What If It Rains On My Wedding Day?

One of my favourite weddings took place in a forest.

The couple had chosen a beautiful woodland setting, surrounded by towering trees and nature. It was exactly the type of ceremony they had always imagined.

As guests arrived there were a few nervous glances towards the sky. The forecast had been changeable all week, but the weather had held.

Until it did not.

Without much warning, hailstones started falling through the trees.

For about thirty seconds there was complete chaos.

Umbrellas appeared from nowhere.

Guests laughed.

People shuffled closer together.

Everyone looked at each other wondering if this was really happening.

And then, almost as quickly as it started, it stopped.

Thirty seconds.

That was it.

The ceremony continued.

The couple got married.

The guests settled back into place.

And before long the hailstones had become part of the story everyone was telling.

Then came my favourite part.

As the ceremony finished and the newly married couple walked back down the aisle together, the sun came out.

The umbrellas disappeared.

The guests were smiling.

And there they were, walking hand in hand through the forest, happily married.

It was beautiful.

After more than twenty years working in weddings, I have learned that perfection is often overrated.

The weddings people remember are the ones with stories.

The unexpected moments.

The things nobody could have planned.

So if you are worrying about rain on your wedding day, do not spend too much energy on something none of us can control.

The weather will do whatever the weather decides to do.

But at the end of the day, you will be married to the person you love.

And that is what everyone will remember. x
