Your Wedding Day Timeline: What Really Happens From Morning Until Midnight

One of the questions I am asked most often is:

"What actually happens on a wedding day?"

If you have never been married before, it can feel like a complete mystery. Everyone talks about the ceremony and the first dance, but there are so many little moments in between that make the day flow effortlessly.

After spending years working behind the scenes at weddings, and now standing alongside couples as their celebrant, here is a realistic guide to how your day might unfold.

7.00 am | Wake Up

Today is finally here.

Before the excitement takes over, have a proper breakfast and start drinking water. It sounds simple, but it is amazing how many couples forget to eat once the day gets going.

Take a few quiet moments for yourself. The rest of the day will pass more quickly than you can imagine.

7.30 am | Hair and Makeup

The morning slowly comes alive.

Music is playing, coffees are being made and the excitement starts to build. This is one of the happiest parts of the day, so enjoy it.

Top tip: Ask someone else to deal with messages and phone calls so you can stay present.

9.30 am | Gather the Details

Your photographer will usually want your dress, shoes, jewellery, perfume, invitations and rings together for detail photographs.

Having everything in one place saves time and means nothing is forgotten.

10.00 am | Detail Photographs

Before anyone is dressed, your photographer captures the little things that help tell the story of your wedding day.

These often become some of your favourite photographs.

11.00 am | Flowers Arrive

Bouquets and buttonholes are delivered.

Keep bouquets in water until you are ready to leave. They will stay looking fresh throughout the day.

11.30 am | Getting Dressed

Allow more time than you think.

Buttons, jewellery, cufflinks, veils and last minute adjustments nearly always take longer than expected.

A relaxed morning creates a relaxed ceremony.

12.15 pm | First Look (Optional)

Whether it is a parent, your bridal party or your partner, this is often one of the most emotional moments of the entire day.

Your photographer will quietly capture reactions you may not even notice.

1.15 pm | Time to Leave

Aim to arrive around fifteen minutes before your ceremony.

It gives you a chance to gather your thoughts, take a deep breath and settle before your guests see you.

1.45 pm | Guests Arrive

Guests begin to gather.

Music plays.

The anticipation builds.

This is the moment your wedding starts to feel real.

2.00 pm | Your Ceremony

Everything else fades into the background.

Forget about your guests for a little while and focus on each other.

This is the reason everyone has travelled to be with you.

2.35 pm | Confetti

Take your time.

Walk slowly.

Smile at one another.

These first few moments as newlyweds often produce some of the happiest photographs of the day.

2.45 pm | Drinks Reception and Canapés

Congratulations begin, glasses are raised and canapés appear.

Remember to eat.

It is surprisingly easy to spend an hour chatting without realising you have not had anything since breakfast.

3.00 pm | Group Photographs

Family photographs are usually taken while everyone is together.

Having a prepared photo list and somebody who knows both families makes this part quick and relaxed.

3.30 pm | Couple Portraits

For many couples, this is the first quiet moment together all day.

Take it in.

You are married.

4.30 pm | Guests Are Called for Dinner

Before everyone takes their seats, take one minute to look around your reception room.

You have spent months planning these details.

Enjoy seeing it exactly as you imagined.

5.00 pm | Speeches

Some of the funniest, most emotional moments of the day happen here.

As a general guide, keeping speeches to around thirty minutes in total helps maintain the flow of the day and keeps everyone engaged.

5.30 pm | Cake Cutting

Many venues now cut the cake before dinner is served.

It creates another lovely shared moment before everyone relaxes for the meal.

5.40 pm | Dinner Is Served

Traditionally called the wedding breakfast, this is your opportunity to slow down.

Enjoy your meal.

Chat with your guests.

Take everything in.

7.30 pm | The Evening Celebration Begins

The atmosphere changes.

The band starts.

The dance floor begins to fill.

The formal part of the day is over.

Now it is time to celebrate.

8.00 pm | First Dance

Forget trying to make it perfect.

Look at each other.

Smile.

Nobody remembers perfect choreography. They remember how happy you looked.

8.45 pm | Golden Hour

If the weather is kind, slip away with your photographer for ten minutes.

These often become the photographs that end up framed on your walls.

9.00 pm Onwards | Celebrate

From here, the timeline disappears.

Dance.

Laugh.

Catch up with family.

Make memories.

Last Drink of the Night

Before you leave, pause for just a moment.

Look around the room.

Every person there has gathered to celebrate your story.

Take a mental photograph.

It is a moment you will never experience in quite the same way again.
