Two Ceremonies. One Wedding. Could Northern Ireland and the Algarve Work Together?

There are holidays.

And then there are holidays when you somehow manage to turn a few days in the sunshine into a business idea.

I am heading to Albufeira in the Algarve for a few days, and alongside the sunshine, swimming and hopefully doing very little for at least part of the trip, I am also going to be meeting some local wedding planners.

Because I have had an idea.

Two ceremonies. One wedding.

The idea is actually quite simple

Destination weddings are wonderful, but for couples from Northern Ireland and the UK, the legal side of getting married abroad can sometimes add another layer of planning.

So what if we connected the two experiences?

A couple could complete their legal marriage here in Northern Ireland with me, then travel to the Algarve for their destination celebration and have me conduct their symbolic ceremony there too.

The legal ceremony and the destination ceremony would not feel like two completely separate events.

They would be two parts of the same story.

And because I would be involved in both, I would already know the couple, their families, their story and what matters to them.

That is the bit that really interests me.

Why the Algarve?

The Algarve has been a favourite with Irish and British holidaymakers for generations.

Sunshine certainly helps.

But there is also something wonderfully accessible about it. Beautiful coastline, beaches, villas, hotels and venues, without necessarily feeling like you have to travel halfway around the world to have a destination wedding.

For a couple who loves the idea of getting married abroad but wants to make things relatively easy for family and friends travelling from home, I can see why Portugal is so appealing.

And that got me thinking about the couples who might love the best of both worlds.

The legal ceremony does not have to be the boring bit

This is important to me.

I would never want the ceremony in Northern Ireland to feel like something that simply has to be ticked off before the “real wedding” abroad.

It is still the moment you legally marry each other.

It could be intimate and relaxed, with just the people you want around you.

Then the Algarve celebration can have a completely different energy.

Perhaps that is where all your guests join you.

Perhaps you exchange personal vows there.

Perhaps we tell more of your story.

Perhaps you save particular readings or symbolic elements for Portugal.

The ceremonies can be different without one being less important than the other.

And that is why I am meeting wedding planners

I know weddings.

I know ceremonies.

I know the Northern Ireland legal process.

But if I am going to talk to couples about celebrating their wedding in the Algarve, I want local knowledge around me.

I want to know the planners who understand the venues, suppliers, locations, logistics and all the little things that someone on the ground knows because they work there every day.

Good collaboration should work like that.

You bring what you know.

I bring what I know.

And between us, we make things easier for the couple.

So while I am in Albufeira, I am going to have a few conversations and see where they lead.

There might be something exciting in this.

There might not.

That is the fun of trying something new.

Two ceremonies. One story.

The more I think about this concept, the more I like it.

Not because every destination couple needs two enormous ceremonies.

Quite the opposite.

The Northern Ireland ceremony could be tiny.

The Algarve ceremony could be the big celebration.

Or both could be intimate.

There are so many ways it could work.

The important thing for me is continuity.

You would not be meeting a stranger when you arrive at your destination and handing them your story.

I would already know it.

I would have stood with you when you legally became married in Northern Ireland.

And then, a few days or weeks later, I could stand with you again in the Algarve as you celebrate that marriage with the people you love.

Two places. Two very different moments. One wedding story.

For now, though, I am off to Albufeira to meet some people, ask lots of questions and see whether this little idea has legs.

And yes, I fully intend to fit a holiday in there somewhere too. ☀️
